The boob debate

January 13, 2009

I was watching Real Housewives of Orange County last night, judge if you will. The gang was at the horse races wearing big hats and trying to be sophisticated as they drunkenly stumbled around the paddock.  And at one point Tamra was criticizing Gretchen’s need for attention and said, “was she not breast fed as a child?” HUH?!

1) Is that really necessary? I mean, why bring Gretchen’s mom into it?

2) I am so done with the whole breast feeding debate and using it as ammunition to criticize others.

Now, I have been lucky enough to be able to breast feed my baby and I know that there are a lot of reasons why it is good for your baby (and super convenient for you!).  But there are also pluses to going the other route and I, for one, am not comfortable judging people for making whatever decision is right for their family.

Some of the huge plusses for using formula: 1) the dad (or grandparents or other caretakers) can be much more involved from the beginning and 2) the mom doesn’t have to watch her diet as carefully (not to mention alcohol intake).

And as for the argument that a lack of breast feeding could hurt your child’s self-confidence or IQ.  I know A LOT of very well adjusted, very smart people who were formula fed.  So can’t we just let it go?

And, seriously, don’t bring someone’s mom into your attacks on their character, that is just low class, even when you are wearing a big, fancy hat.
